My 2nd article for Gekkhan.. I hope this passed with flying colors hehehe. Thanks to Tin, Coq and Eric for proof reading!! Abee, remember this? Valentine's Day, I asked you to walked with me fom IPC to Paseo hehe. Enjoy Reading!!! The BITTER - SWEET of Being at Service When I was interviewed for the Customer Relations Officer (CRO) position, I was not fully aware of the responsibilities of a CRO. What I had in mind were my experiences during my summer jobs way back in college and from what I heard from friends. I was excited when the case folders were handed to me. I was even amazed while I was reading each case and at the same time listening to the instructions given by superiors. For me, it would be a fun job since I would be able to meet new people and help them with their vehicle concerns. It was like I am a modern day Sherlock Holmes, receiving cases and mysteries, investigate, solve problem and identify the villain. But I was wrong. Not all problems can be solved amicably, NOT all day you could put a smile on everyone’s face when you break the news that their request was disapproved. I also realized that not all people are nice as what I expected. There were some that do not know how to appreciate the efforts and the others were just not sympathetic at all. To back track a bit, there was this incident where I received a phone call from a customer who had a problem with the chassis stamping of his unit. Our section had to request from the customer certain requirements in order for us to verify the details of the vehicle. When I explained it to him, he began shouting at me and told me that he had no time to send the documents to us and demanded for a Certification, ASAP. Calmly, I explained again the requirements clearly and patiently. Then the customer hanged up on me. The next day, he came to the office looking for me. Right there and then, he shouted at my face and telling me harsh words, which shocked me. It was a good thing that I was with my boss who had to pacify him. I was still in trance from the time the customer left and even after office hours. At that time, it was normal for me to just take a walk when I am down and depressed. The farther I walk the better since it gives me the relief. I asked a friend to walk with me while contemplating on what happened. When we stepped out of IPC gate, I was confused and clueless. We reached LTI Rotonda still asking myself is the job worth it. We arrive at Paseo and I was still in search for valid reasons why I should stay or leave my job. I was interrupted by a scene, a woman complaining to the waiter about their order. The customer was shouting at the waiter exactly the same thing that happened to me. But I noticed that, instead of shouting back to this customer, he asked her with a smile, “Hi ma’am, how may I help you?” He was so composed and gentle in assisting the customer with her concern. This stunned me and asked myself how he did it. Where did the waiter find the courage to smile back without any assurance that he would pacify the customer? This made me decide. I will accept the challenge. I will stay. Looking back at my decision, I have no regret. I am now enjoying the art of negotiating. Solving problems, assisting and providing answers to queries have been my everyday routine. And surprisingly, I’m not getting bored. I earned a lot of friends with my job, learned a lot of things and know how to drive too. When someone asked me if I want to leave my job, I answered, “now, I think I won’t”. My work has already been part of my system. It is within me. It seems like blood running in my veins. This sounds crazy, but I realized that I learned how to love and enjoy my work despite of the disappointments it has brought me whenever a customer shouts at me or demand something that I cannot give. There were some occasions that customers were so kind and considerate to understand that we are just following the rules. This may sound funny, I’ve been working for years now but I am still emotionally touched whenever a customer extends their sincere appreciation by saying, “thank you” for the help I have extended to them. Whenever this happens, I always tell myself, “Ah, I made one soul happy today”. Being at service is not an easy job at all; it is like a roller coaster experience. But believe it or not, it is worth the ride.
